The Liver and Gallbladder

The liver has over 500 functions. Here we mention a few:

  • The liver stores iron, vitamins and minerals
  • The liver makes bile that helps digestion
  • The liver detoxifies poisonous chemicals
  • The liver stores fat, carbohydrates and glubose as energy reserve
  • The liver makes blood
  • The liver makes new proteins
  • The liver makes clotting factors

  • The liver is the biggest gland in our body and weighs about 1,5 kg (3.3 lbs). It is divided into two lobes which are respectively divided into many lobules. These lobules are the functioning units of the liver

The lobules, which contain the hepatocytes (liver cells)  are small exagonal or pentagonal cylinders, high 2 mm (0.079 inch) diameter 1 mm (0.039 inch). In these tiny lobules an immense work of storage, metabolism, production and detoxification takes place.

At each angle of the lobule, there are three vessels:

  • the hepatic artery, which brings clean blood to oxygenize the hepatocytes
  • the portal vein, comes from the intestine bringing nutrients and vitamins to be stores and metabolized. It also brings damaged red blood cells, bacteria and toxins which need to be removed by the hepatocytes.
  • the bile duct flows in the opposite direction. The hepatocytes produce bile which end up in these bile ducts. These ducts will form the common liver duct and will fuse with the cystic duct, coming from the gallbladder.

At the center of each lobule there is the central lobular vein.  The blood flowing from the hepatic artery and the portal vein ends up into the central lobular vein and from here enter the rest of the circulation system, reaching the heart to restart its cycle.gallbladder_1.jpg

The gallbladder contains about 30 to 50ml of concentrated bile. It is about 5 to 10 times more concentrated then when it's formed in the liver. An adult produces about 800 ml of bile daily

The Bile

Bile is made of  water, cholesterol. bile salts, proteins, bilirubin and fat. Together with the pancreatic juices, it will enable digestion of fats and vitamins in the duodenum as well as the absorption of calcium and iron.

The presence of liver stones can impede the flowing of sufficient bile, which in turn will neither allow a sufficient flow of the pancreatic juices. If sufficient absorption fails, the body will take the necessary calcium and iron from the bones.

Malabsorption will cause undigested food which in turn will create a proliferation of bacteria.
